The State of Rio de Janeiro will invest in Amaral Peixoto Highway.
Twenty kilometers between Maricá and Saquarema, and another 30 from Rio das Ostras to Macaé, will be doubled in size.
The roads in the state of Rio de Janeiro will benefit from investments up to R$2.8 billion. There will be over 700 km of improvements. The announcement was made by the State Government. Among the roads that will receive investments, is RJ-106.
Amaral Peixoto Highway is one of the main access routes to the Região dos Lagos area and thousands of vehicles pass through it every day.
The road is full of curves, there is no shoulder for most of it and there are sections where the asphalt is uneven. The danger increases when drivers risk passing even where prohibited.
R$2.8 billion will be spent on highway expansion and repair of the asphalt, all under the responsibility of the DER (the Department of Roads and Highways). Twenty kilometers between Maricá and Saquarema, and another 30 between Rio das Ostras and Macaé, will be doubled in size.
The DER is forecast to start construction in the second half of this year.
For the state government, these improvements contribute to the economic development of the region, from tourism to the flow of production from the industrial parks. Overall, the improvements will be made on 750 km of state roads. The projected works should be completed in 2014.
