Beaches - Praia das Tartarugas

Meaning "Turtle Beach". Found between Praia do Abrico and Praia do Bosque, this beach is so named because it shelters the largest number of sea turtles in the city. It also has a large rock at the point which is shaped like a turtle when viewed from above. The Tamar Project, which is dedicated to protect the turtles, monitors this beach to help preserve the species which were in danger of extinction.

It's worth the time to walk out to the point of the rocks and watch the turtles. They seem to love rough seas, so the harder the waves crash, the more we see.

The main part of the beach has rough water, rough sand, a steep drop off, and is a good beach to find seashells, but the sheltered cove on the side nearest the rocks is very gentle and has shade from the trees. It's a good place for families with small children who can swim. The water here still gets fairly deep.

There are no kiosks here, so bring your own food and drinks and please clean up after yourselves. It's a beautiful beach and the neighbors would like to keep it that way!

The beach is about 1km long, and three to fifteen meters wide.
