Beaches - Praia da Joana

Small in size and huge in charm, Praia da Joana is part of the "Monumento Natural dos Costões Rochosos" of Rio das Ostras. It has vegetation typical of the city, with many bromeliads, cacti, orchids, small shrubs, almond and coconut trees. It has crystal clear water, rocks at the ends and is located right near Coconut Island.

There is plenty of shade provided by the trees that skirt the beach.

There is also a kiosk/restaurant with picnic tables and plenty of drinks and snacks.

This is a popular site for watching sea turtles and for fishing. It has space for about 50 cars parked nearby but no access by public transport.

The beach is not easy to find, but can be reached by car. It is found at the junction of Rua Maria Amalia and Rua Ney. Pecegueiro do Amaral. The best way to arrive from Cosazul is to follow Rua Alceu Lucio Gomez west to the end. This is a dirt road, but seems to be in good shape. DO NOT try to drive on Rua Nilda, as this is an extremely rocky, rutted and at times steep road that normal cars can not pass.

I have heard from many friends who live here that it is the favorite beach for locals, and with good reason. While it is located centrally in the city, it feels like a secluded paradise.

The beach is about 80 meters long and 10 to 30 meters wide.

You can click on the "Location" link below to see a google map of exactly where the beach is located.
