Restaurant - Macaxeira Tapiocaria

What: Macaxeira Tapiocaria
Where: Avenida Beira Mar in Centro, second shop from the corner near the Praca São Pedro
Hours: 3pm to about 10pm, Tuesday through Sunday

This little shop facing the beach serves excellent tapioca, in the full range of varieties. Sweet, savory, cheesy, even a pizza style dish. Tapioca is a root starch derived from the cassava plant. The same stuff that tapioca pudding and bubble tea are made from. When the starch is dried and in powder form, it can be heated in a shallow, non-stick pan and used as a sort of tortilla. Trust me, this is good stuff!

This little restaurant is friendly, and spotlessly clean. Favorites of ours include carne seco com tomate seco (dried beef with sundried tomatoes) chicken with cheese, and chocolate with banana, although coconut with leite condensado is right up there too.

They also have a huge variety of really good (and fresh) fruit juices.

The owner's name is Fabio. If you stop by, tell him Brian and Meggie sent you (He speaks English).
